Dana DuTerroil

I spent the majority of my writing career as a lawyer. Most of my writing now focuses on Houston, where I live and co-own a business, Trip Chandler, a two-woman team who creates personalized guides and tours of the city, including co-authoring 111 Places in Houston That You Must Not Miss for the 111 Places series. I'm also a freelance writer with a thing for personal essays, travel narratives, and research.

Sophia Lee

High School Writer

I am a current Content Writing Intern at digital entertainment media startup polljuice and a high school senior (Class of 2021). My desire to communicate knowledge on a variety of subjects in a clear and engaging manner defines my writing and translates to my academic endeavors. As a polljuice intern, I've been fortunate to enjoy the freedom to pick my article topics. I enjoy researching and writing the gamut. I weigh the merits of dark chocolate vs milk chocolate. I question why we don't refer to other countries' names in their own language. I explore the beautiful foreign words for emotions with no English equivalent. I look at the pumpkin spice latte and contemplate another double standard women face. I link the physiology of fatigue with the phenomenon of deep late night conversations. I marvel at the scientific persuasive power behind dogs' puppy dog eyes. I probe America's history of public shaming. At this point, I realize I've referred to a good number of my articles. All this to say, I have an enthusiasm to learn more and share this knowledge. I'm grateful that my polljuice internship gives me the opportunity to do just that. In college, I hope to continue honing my writing skills through class papers, lab reports, and joining a school journal. My wide range of interests influenced my primary academic interests in interdisciplinary psychology, neuroscience, and nutrition science. Although I've gained most of my professional experience in communications, the time management, research, and avid curiosity that fueled those endeavors will serve me well in my intended future areas of focus.

Chapel Fowler

Sports Editor, The Chatham News + Record

Thanks for checking out my work. My name is Chapel Fowler, and I'm a 2020 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate currently covering high school and local sports with a dash of news for The Chatham News + Record, a weekly community paper just outside North Carolina's Triangle area. I've been hooked on sports journalism since the fall of 2016, when I wrote my first ever story for the Daily Tar Heel, UNC's independent student newspaper, on a volleyball match. Since then, I've worked as a senior writer and sports editor for the DTH, covering virtually every sport on campus; interned at The Charlotte Observer and Virginian-Pilot/Daily Press in Hampton Roads, Virginia; and freelanced consistently for a variety of local and and national outlets. In my current role at the News + Record, I cover five high schools and anyone or anything else relevant to the sports audience in Chatham County, a short drive from Raleigh, Durham or Chapel Hill. I also chip in on general news coverage, copy editing, production, social media and our weekly newsletter. In the clips below, I hope you can get a sense of my writing style. I've picked out a variety of stories, including deadline gamers, in-depth profiles and enterprise stories, from the various publications I've worked for over the last four years. If you'd like to get in touch for any reason, you can find me on Twitter or LinkedIn by clicking the links below or email me at chapelfowler@gmail.com.

Michelle Feder

writing and academic tutor

"Why is writing so hard?" Writing encompasses everything from coming up with ideas, planning, understanding the purpose of an assignment, shaping paragraphs, assembling sentences, to staying focused--down to the last spell-check. I want to help learners of every age find greater ease in self-expression, whether writing a college application essay, generating a paper of literary analysis, or studying vocabulary. I want them to become stronger readers, writers, thinkers. When I get to know new families, I strive to understand their goals, and I develop strategies to strengthen skills for every student. Whenever possible, I love to tailor the materials to their interests. In addition to overall language arts and humanities studies, I support students with language-based learning challenges, including dyslexia and dysgraphia. To better serve all learners, I studied Wired for Reading, a kid-friendly linguistics program designed to strengthen reading, spelling, and vocabulary. To supplement my knowledge of handwriting mechanics, particularly for students who learned at home during the pandemic, I've begun studying Handwriting Without Tears. Even with keyboarding, it's critical that students retain the skill of writing by hand. Past elementary school, few schools continue to focus on writing fundamentals. So for many students, with all kinds of minds, a structured approach, beginning at the sentence level, is the place to start. Before becoming a mentor for writing and learning, I worked as a journalist and writer for Microsoft and other Seattle-area ventures. As a writer, I tell stories through a human lens, designed to make businesses grow and individual lives better. Bringing together my professional background in communications and my passion for lifelong learning, I encourage a skill-based, conversational writing and thinking process with time-tested tools, craft, and heart. Whether your focus is remediation, enrichment, or a college application essay, I'm happy to be a resource. michelle.writingmentor@gmail.com
