Méndez González is an award-winning environmental investigative reporter for Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism. He is a passionate, data-driven investigative journalist with a strong interest in stories about Puerto Rico, where he was born and raised. His commitment has led him to collaborate with award-winning investigative teams at the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Día newspapers. He earned a master’s degree in Information Design and Data Visualization from Northeastern University. He has been a fellow with environmental journalism organizations such as Climate Tracker, The Uproot Project, Metcalf Institute, and Ocean Nexus. He has also been awarded by the Overseas Press Club, the Caribbean Tourism Association, Climate Tracker, and the Puerto Rico Journalists Association for his investigations on the environmental footprint of urban, tourism, and coastal developments in Puerto Rico.

Méndez González es un periodista investigativo con pericia en temas ambientales para el Centro de Periodismo Investigativo. Es un apasionado del análisis de datos y de contar historias sobre Puerto Rico, donde nació y creció. Gracias a su compromiso, ha colaborado con equipos investigativos de alto perfil en periódicos como el Miami Herald y El Nuevo Día. Obtuvo una maestría en Diseño de Información y Visualización de Datos de Northeastern University. Ha sido becario de organizaciones especializadas en periodismo ambiental como Climate Tracker, The Uproot Project, Metcalf Institute y Ocean Nexus. Ha sido premiado, además, por el Overseas Press Club, la Asociación de Periodistas de Puerto Rico, la Asociación de Turismo del Caribe y Climate Tracker por sus investigaciones sobre la huella ambiental de los desarrollos costeros, urbanos y turísticos en Puerto Rico.

The construction of the Western Bypass in Mayagüez, along with other commercial developments on the outskirts, has destroyed wetlands and altered the hydrology of ecosystems adjacent to the Caño Boquilla in this municipality, worsening the flooding that continuously affects residents in the El Maní sector.
