🙄 For those of us older job seekers, we've heard it all. 💬 Below are a few common statements we've heard over the years relating to our resumes. 😎 Just for fun, I've added responses I've thought about - often. 😉 Maybe they'll appear in a future edition of my webcomic, "EXCUSE ME...YOUR BIAS IS SHOWING."
Age bias is only the beginning. Employers ignoring age bias in their organizations cause it to escalate to age discrimination. Then, employers, you've got a much bigger and more serious problem. Hiring and workplace discrimination based on age involving job seekers, job applicants, job candidates, and employees 40+50+60+ is ILLEGAL.
In the business world, age bias is alive and well. Age bias impacts decisions by CEOs, recruiters, HR personnel, hiring managers, department managers, and their teams. When age bias infects an organization, it's like playing whack-a-mole to eliminate it, especially if those in charge choose to ignore it.
EMPLOYER: "I don't want to hire a candidate in their 50s and 60s because they'll only retire in a couple of years." I used to believe a statement like this was due to a misconception about older people. But I was wrong.
OVERQUALIFIED. It doesn't mean what it says anymore. So, I've decided to create a new definition that makes sense in 2025. This is the polite version: 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗗: 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 A word used ad nauseam found in millions of rejection letters to job applicants/candidates 40+50+60+.

Despite what many in recruiting and HR still claim, AI-driven hiring systems are not bias-free. They replicate and even automate discrimination-including age bias-at scale.
