Experienced Marketing and Public Relations professional with a demonstrated history of working in the hospital and healthcare industry. Skilled in storytelling, internal communications, event planning, strategic planning, marketing, public relations and digital and social media.
About Me: I’m a compassionate and creative healthcare communicator with a journalism foundation and a passion for storytelling that makes a difference. Currently, I serve as the Communications Coordinator at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, part of the RWJBarnabas Health system, where I help bring our hospital’s mission and community impact to life through strategic content and thoughtful messaging. In my role, I support internal and external communication efforts, crafting press releases, blogs, and patient stories; creating content for our consumer e-newsletter; designing collateral like flyers and digital signage; and coordinating messaging across teams. I collaborate with doctors and care teams to develop meaningful content, from patient stories that highlight the human side of healthcare to blogs that translate complex topics into accessible language for our community. I also assist with our social media presence by proofreading posts, generating content ideas, capturing behind-the-scenes moments, and occasionally editing video or taking photos to complement campaigns. While I don’t manage the accounts directly, I love being involved in the creative and collaborative process that drives engagement. Check it out on IG, Twitter, LinkedIn and FaceBook @CoopermanBarnabasMedicalCenter. My storytelling roots began in journalism, writing for The Coast Star Newspaper and The Ramapo News, where I earned awards for my features on mental health in college athletics. That experience taught me the power of empathy and accuracy in reporting, lessons I carry into healthcare communications. Currently pursuing my Master’s in Communication and Information at Rutgers University, I’m building on those skills and continuing to explore the evolving role of media in public health. Whether it’s a patient spotlight or an internal initiative, I strive to create meaningful, accessible content that connects people to care, and to each other. Want to contact me? Freelance writer, producer, jack of many trades
If you're reading this and you know who I am, it's probably because you're a Washington Huskies fan who has followed my work through the absolute rollercoaster of the last decade-ish. But you're probably not and probably don't, which is cool. I'm a writer, editor, producer, comedian, and generally adaptable person. Can engineer copy with three-word precision or write you an unhinged weirdo voice'd 20 minute read (or something in between); can produce the logistics of making your media happen, can edit whatever words you want to make them better. There are even lots of comments on the internet -- AKA the meanest place on Earth -- saying nice things about my ability to put words in a pleasant order, something scientists previously thought impossible. Below are a few pieces under my own byline, but I've otherwise written copy for Amex, Marriott, the Seattle Kraken, Bartell Drugs, Uwajimaya, Kaiser Permanente, Western Washington Medical Group, and more. Say hi at gabeylucas@gmail.com

Freelance Journalist; Contributing Writer, The Coconut Grove Spotlight; Former Opinion Editor and Staff Writer, The Miami Hurricane; Former Reporting Intern, Courier News
As a journalist and podcaster, I have developed a diverse portfolio covering sports, politics, and various other topics. This summer, I interned at Courier News in Somerville, NJ, part of the USA Today network. During my time there, I covered town council meetings, crime and court stories, local news, and other events across the counties we served. I am set to graduate from the University of Miami in December 2024, with a major in journalism and minors in political science and finance. My coursework has spanned a range of journalism disciplines, from feature writing to sports journalism, equipping me with many content creation skills. I have had the opportunity to report on a variety of events, from South Miami City Hall meetings to Inter Miami soccer games and my work has been featured in the Miami Herald. My tenure at the school newspaper, the Miami Hurricane, has been valuable. After nearly two years of writing opinion and news articles, I have become the co-editor for the opinion section in my final semester. My experience also extends to television, specifically at UMTV, the university's TV station. For two years, I contributed to the news show NewsBreak, where I honed my skills in researching, scriptwriting, on-camera performance, and video editing using Adobe Premiere. Additionally, I expanded my technical abilities by learning to record and edit video packages. I have also worked for the school radio station and completed a podcasting class, which led me to create my own podcasts and gain experience using Adobe Audition. Outside the newsroom, I stay informed about current events, both out of professional necessity and personal interest. An essential lesson I've learned is the value of diverse perspectives in journalism. Understanding multiple viewpoints and presenting well-rounded reporting are fundamental to my approach. My minors in political science and finance bolster my subject matter expertise. When tackling stories, I embrace curiosity and skepticism, striving for balanced, objective narratives. I consider myself a versatile reporter, comfortable across various platforms and newsrooms. My ultimate career goal is to be a print reporter covering politics, writing opinion pieces, or hosting my own podcast. With my skill set and dedication to journalistic integrity, I will contribute significantly to the field. I am excited about the opportunities ahead and I look forward to continuing my growth as a journalist.
